APRIL 17 - 18, 2010 STRAIGHT DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

The next tournament will be the weekend of April 17 - 18, 2010. As this is "the season", it is a good idea to make reservations early. Jef is planning on his new "Binary Ladder" format described in prior newsletter, where any team can win any division: the first round allows teams in the upper half or lower half of their initial division to swap into other half; the 2nd round allows each team in upper half of the lower division to switch with a team in lower half of upper division (while round 1 winners in upper and losers in lower continue on an internal round robin); the 3rd round repeats the 1st round (with different opponents for each team, as with a round robin format); the 1st 3 rounds have ordered the teams so that the better players have risen near the top. The best 75% of teams(in each division) continue on. The 4th round has the 2 best teams sit it out while the other 4 teams in each division determine who goes on to semi-finals. The last 2 rounds is a single elimination format with semi-finals and finals. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef, phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY LUNCH
There may be a lunch served at the clubhouse on Saturday -- I don't know yet. If the volunteer cook(s) step up, lunch will be $5 and will benefit the club.

JANELL'S 80th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - APRIL 17 BANQUET
At the April tournament, we will be celebrating JaNell's 80th birthday on Saturday, April 17th, and she wants to be with all her Borrego friends. If you wish to participate in a gift, Harriet plans to buy a Nordstrom gift card, the dollar amount determined by all those who commit to a dollar amount. Contact Harriet with the amount you wish to contribute.

We will have entertainment and other surprises. The catered dinner, including beer, wine, soft drinks, a variety of main courses, and dessert, is $15.00 if you pay by April 3rd. After April 3rd, it will be $20.00 and reservations must be in by April 10th. Please make your check payable to Sandi Granger who is dealing directly with the caterer. Her address is: P.O. Box 1017, Borrego Springs, CA 92004.

We will not do the usual door prize gifts that evening since there will be a lot going on. We look forward to seeing everyone on this special occasion. You won't want to miss it!

If you have any questions, call Marilyn at (714) 525-3214, or Sandi at (760) 413-0001.

BORREGO NEWS
Borrego is experiencing the best wildflower season in many years. On the morning April 1st, Jef and Kathy drove thru snow starting in Culp Valley and continuing for 20 miles to beyond Santa Ysabel! The snow was all gone later that day, however.

On Sunday, April 4, the entire region was rocked by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake with epicenter only 100 miles south of Borrego. Numerous much more minor secondary earthquakes were felt in Borrego over the new few days, including 1 or 2 magnitude 5 quakes only 50 miles away.

MARCH 2010 TOURNAMENT

On the best wildflower weekend in years, we had a fairly small turnout of only 40 players: 22 men and 18 women. Due to the inbalance, Jef decided to do our usual double elimination instead of a round-robin tournament, as there would be slightly less conflicts and stress on the women playing twice. Temperatures topped out at a pleasant 80°F in the gallery, but seemed a little warm on the courts, and occasional slight-to-moderate winds were not a big factor. Sandi Kean won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Sandi!!!

THOUGHTS ON FUTURE TOURNAMENTS
Jef is very busy at work and is stretched to the limit in doing the draw and newsletter, and so is looking for some help. Ron Romeo suggested someone volunteer to be the club statistician. Between tournaments, this person would gather the following information of each player in the club for the prior 6 or so tournaments:
  1. result (winner, finalist, semi-finalist, or other)
  2. partner
  3. divisions played in (upper, middle, lower)
  4. least favorite partners (if player has such preferences -- for example "I don't want to play with my wife", or "my game doesn't work with player x", or "i'm feuding with player y") these requests are made confidentially, but are fairly rare in our club

The statistician would maintain the rating list to be placed on the club's website (currently under the GROUPINGS link) and keep track of their preferred division (upper, middle, lower), and how they rate themselves (for example 3.0, 3.5-, 3.5+, 4.0, etc.)

During the draw, the statistician could help in team selection, or have someone work off information he provides. He would try to:

  1. prevent players from having the same partner as in a recent tournament
  2. prevent players from teaming up who have won in any of their last 6 tournaments
  3. prevent too-strong or too-weak pairings
  4. prevent incompatible pairings -- husband/wife in some situations, in the event players have communicated this to the statistician

Helpers on the newsletter could write a column and/or do any section of the newsletter, like the tournament results for example. Anybody could contribute such a column at any time.

Ron Romeo has also suggested some interesting ideas for future tournaments. Jef also has some ideas, and has modified Ron's suggestions:

  1. A "Challenge" round, played at 5pm on Saturday. One example is: where if some team is dissatisfied playing in a lower division, and is undefeated by the end of Saturday, the team can challenge any team still in contention in the losers bracket of a higher division and exchange places if the lower division team wins the match.
  2. Automatically go to a round-robin format with multiple partners for either low attendence or a very unbalanced situation in mixed doubles (difference between numbers of men and women more than 2, for example). The reason being to prevent too many players playing too much when they play with 2 partners in the normal formats.
  3. Increase tournament fees (by about $10 per player) to hire a pro to do the draws and run the tournament
  4. Phoenix teams in the normal double elimination format: a pool of players who have been eliminated can re-connect with a different partner (with some restrictions decided by the statistician), also in the loser pool, either do the 5pm Saturday challenge or add another round where the phantom team can re-enter the tournament. This should either be a challenge to the team still in the losers bracket that has played the least or the undefeated team. As this is double elimination, if the phantom team plays the undefeated team and wins, it must win a tie-breaker to stay and eliminate the other team.

Editorial: Jef is hoping the board of the tennis club changes the current fee structure. Many members are paying full dues, but for various reasons are showing up very little or not at all. Most of these members can not afford to continue this, and have been or will leave the club unless this changes. A fairer fee structure would be to have a much lower membership fee (or maybe none at all) -- maybe the equivalent of the fee for a single tournament, and a larger tournament fee. Non-playing members should pay less per tournament, as they are not using the courts -- maybe $5. Also if a non-player makes a brief visit up to a few hours, they shouldn't be required to pay at all. Assuming tournaments average 40 players and 15 non-players, it may be possible to pay expenses if the tournament fee is $20 for players and $5 for non-players, each tournament would generate $875. Everyone would have to join the club on their 2nd appearance, but since the membership fee is so low, they wouldn't so easily be dissuaded from joining. If 60 payed the $20 membership fee, this amounts to about $1075 per tournament, which about pays the rent. Other income, such as the $5 saturday lunch could cover the difference in expenses, which are probably (currently) in the vicinity of $1200/tournament. I don't know the actual expenses, but these numbers probably aren't that far off. By reducing the membership fees, we can retain members longer. Club income might actually increase with such a new system. Some old members would probably return!

CLUB NEWS
I think there's a new VP and Treasurer, not sure who as Jef is bleary-eyed working late on this newsletter because he isn't getting much help (hint, hint ;) Marilyn has continued on as president. Also, I'm not sure who is on the board. Perhaps this will be cleared up in the next newsletter. Actually, I think Joanne Cohen is the new treasurer.

PERFECT COUPLE

Once upon a time, a perfect man and a perfect woman met. After a perfect courtship, they had a perfect wedding. Their life together was, of course, perfect.

One snowy, stormy Christmas Eve, this perfect couple was driving their perfect car along a winding road, when they noticed someone at the side of the road in distress.

Being the perfect couple, they stopped to help.

There stood Santa Claus with a huge bundle of toys. Not wanting to disappoint any children on the eve of Christmas, the perfect couple loaded Santa and his toys into their vehicle.

Soon they were driving along delivering the toys. Unfortunately, the driving conditions deteriorated and the perfect couple; and Santa Claus had an accident.

Only one of them survived the accident.

Question: Who was the survivor?

(Scroll down for the answer. Trust me, it's worth it)

Answer:

The perfect woman survived. She's the only one who really existed in the first place. Everyone knows there is no Santa Claus and there is no such thing as a perfect man.

So, if there is no perfect man and no Santa Claus, the woman must have been driving. This explains why there was a car accident.
