A MEMO FROM MARILYN
What a way to end the 2009- 2010 Borrego season. JaNell’s birthday celebration couldn’t have been more perfect. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all.

For those who were not at the April tournament, we ended the season with approximately $3,500 which is $1,200 more than last year—thanks in part to all you people who were instrumental in our fund raisers. Fred Dow, Ron Romeo and Peg Lieb all prepared great lunches at a profit for the club. And Harriet Lisak, our biggest cheerleader, led the way last season with the “free membership” raffle, followed this time by Marla Anderson, Barbara Ash, Sandi Kean (aka Harold’s Harem) and Harold Plett. It was another very successful raffle, bringing in $520. And Lee Lisak donated his annual $100 winnings back to the club. What a guy! Two people approached me and offered to donate a couple fantastic items for a raffle next year. It’s a surprise! So, with wonderful, enthusiastic people like these, our club is bound to thrive.

Led by Ron and Mary Kay Romeo, we also had a very hard-working group come up with a streamlined method for the draw. They were assisted by Al and Peg Lieb, Gary and Jan McNamara, Gary Edwards, Mike Shoemaker and Jef Johnson. The new ladder will be adjusted in order to allow some movement between divisions, based on objective data. Complete information will be emailed to all members prior to our next tournament.

We welcome our new members from San Diego, Jim and Janie Munce. They were introduced to the club by Jeff and Annette Marxen (who were introduced by Al and Peg). We love San Diego!!!

We are so grateful for the contributions made by our many talented people. And speaking of talent, we are fortunate to have Nancy Shoemaker entertain us with her beautiful voice whenever we ask. She sings Christmas Carols, the National Anthem, Happy Birthday and any other requests. This cute little gal really knows how to belt out a song. Thanks so much, Nancy, for adding a special dimension to our tennis weekends.

Thanks also to another talented singer, Ed Ghiorso, who is always willing to sing his melodic “Dino” songs. Viva Italia! Just think—we could have our own show called Borrego Idol.

Hope to see you all on Halloween weekend for Borrego Days. Plan to hop on your brooms and make your way to the desert. It should be a chilling and ghostly time. You may even meet a few monsters on the courts. Bring your favorite dishes for the potluck, like spook stew, fried bat wings, toasted toads, or boiled eyes of newt, plus your own witches brew. (Marla Anderson helped prepare this menu. I sure hope she never invites me to dinner.)

Jef will be providing next year’s complete tournament schedule in his newsletter, so be sure to read all his announcements. Have a wonderful and safe summer.

OCTOBER 30 - 31 MIXED DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

The next tournament will be the weekend of October 30 - 31. As this is a scary time of year, it is a good idea to make reservations early. If you are planning to play, you must sign up by 7:30 p.m. on the eve of the tournament. Sign-up at the clubhouse, or contact Jef, phone 760-767-4536, e-mail: jefbstc@gmail.com, or if all else fails, call the tennis center at 760-767-0577 the Friday night before the tournament (definitely before 8 p.m.). The draw will be completed by around 9:00 P.M. and play will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. If you want us to call you with the start time, add your phone number with your name when you sign up. Also, if you are just joining the club, please provide contact information, preferably an e-mail address, if you wish to receive a newsletter, and if you want to be listed in the club's directory. If you want to share and consume goodies, there will be a Goody Bar in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

SATURDAY LUNCH
There may be a lunch served at the clubhouse on Saturday. If the volunteer cook(s) step up, lunch will probably be around $5. Net proceeds will benefit the club.

SATURDAY NIGHT POTLUCK
Happy hour will be at 6:30pm and dinner will commence around 7 p.m. As this is a pot luck, bring something to share if you can. Also, if you bring any door prizes, put them in the door prize area before door prizes are drawn.
BORREGO NEWS
Although the April tournament sweltered with highs in the 90's, just 3 days later, temperatures were 30° cooler! Thursday saw snow cover Ranchita with snow getting well below 4000'! This continued a cooler than normal spring in the valley.
APRIL 2010 TOURNAMENT

On another great wildflower weekend, we had a good turnout with 47 players: 23 men and 24 women. 2 formats were decided on: the normal double elimination in the top tiers and a round robin in the lowers. There were "problems" in just about all of the 4 divisions, what with injuries, sickness, drop-outs, and other things, but we all seemed to have a lot of fun on the courts. Temperatures were over 90°F on Saturday with very little wind, but about 5° cooler on Sunday, with slightly more wind. The first winner of the $50 was not present, and so it was drawn again. Denny Bean was the next ticket drawn, but he graciously asked for another drawing in his place. Finally, Ursula Hawkins won the $50 drawing. Congratulations, Ursula!!!

The Grangers were given a book on Alaska in appreciation by the club, in memory of their epic adventure there last summer.

By this time, dinner is mostly gone.

He spent some time trying close down the party, but JaNell eventually prevailed, and the party went on.

In fact, people started dancing!

A Conga line started, and eventually circled the court!

HEALTH TIPS
It is well documented that for every minute that you exercise, you add one minute to your life. This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $5000 per month.

I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.

You could run this over to your friends but why not just e-mail it to them!
